AHS 1953-54 Basketball

1953-54 Ashland High School Boys Basketball Team

  • Head Coach, Cloyce Taylor, Assistant Coach, Dick Wolfe, Captain, Ken Sidle. 
  • Sidle led the team in scoring, pouring in a school record 510 points. Jim Dilgard was the number 2 scorer, while Max Messner was a strong rebounder as well as a good scorer. 
  • Most of the seasons found the Arrows ranked third, fourth or fifth in the state newspaper polls. 
  • Sidle, a slender center with a devastating hook shot, was named First Team All-Ohio by all three-newspaper polls (AP, UP, and INS). After winning the first 12 games, the Arrows were upended by East Liverpool, 70-60. Shelby eliminated Ashland from the Class A Sectional Tournament, 68-62.
