Jones was the leading scorer with 299 points and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. He also received Honorable Mention All-Ohio on all three newspaper polls. Bates made All-Ohio Honorable Mention on one poll. Junior Bill Rogers scored 265 points and was named First Team All-Ohio (UP and AP).
Ashland played a strong independent schedule, with both losses coming at the hands of Mansfield Senior. It was Ashland’s tough luck being in the same sectional tournament as Mansfield. The Tygers advanced to the state tournament, before losing to the eventual champion Springfield in the semi-final encounter.
Ashland was rated number 2 in the Ohio polls late in the regular season. At the time, the 108 points scored against Bucyrus in the Class A Sectional game represented a team scoring record, bettering the old mark by 20 points. It was also an all-time state record for a Class A sectional/district tournament game
