Richard “Dick” MarshallRichard “Dick” Marshall

Richard E. "Dick" Marshall was born on March 24, 1940 to parents Levi and C. Helen (Bowman) Marshall. He has four siblings: sisters Bonnie Bowen, Gaye Lawhorn, Vesta Kreiling, and a brother Steve Marshall. Dick was married to Linda Adams of Ashland and has four children: Christine Marshall-Murphy of Orlando, Florida, Randy Marshall of Mansfield, David Marshal of Dover, and Mindy Price of Oviedo, Florida. Dick married his wife Sherry in 1989 and has a step-daughter Richelle Roose of Springfield. They have nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters.

Growing up in Perrysville, Dick was always outdoors ready to play any type of ball. It wasn't until his high school years that his love of sports became a passion. In those years his life revolved around working at the local gas station, school and sports. By the time he graduated from Perrysville in 1958, he had achieved 15 varsity letters.

Dick was an all-around athlete playing football for four years under coach Jim Heiser, basketball with coaches Ray Rathburn and Ron Foote and track with coach Heiser. He only played baseball for 3 years.

Dick was said to be one of Perrysville's finest 6 man football players of all time. His senior year he was the third leading scorer in the nation with 216 points, with only playing 7 games. Dick was the 1957 Ashland Times-Gazette Player of the Year. He was a first team Mansfield News Journal All-Area Team pick and was selected to play in the North Central Ohio All-Star game. Dick was the unanimous choice as MVP of that game.
In the winter, Dick was equally at home on the court. He led the basketball team in scoring his senior year with a 21.1 average per game.

In the spring, Dick kept busy competing in track and playing baseball. His senior year he showed his individual talent by winning four first places in the Ashland County Track Meet. He won the 100 yard dash, 200 yard dash, shot put and discus by throwing over 49 ft. and 140 ft. respectively. At the end of the season, he earned a trip to Columbus where he competed at the State Track Meet in the shot put and discus. When not breaking records in track he played first base and pitched for the Admirals. One of his highlights was when he pitched a one hitter and struck out 15 batters against Polk High School.

After high school, Dick served in the Army from 1958-1960. He spent 18 months in Germany. It was there that he was chosen to play football, basketball, and compete in track meets for the Army against other American teams throughout the country.
After the service Dick worked for F.E. Myers for seven years and then moved on to United Telephone Company in Mansfield. During those years he continued to play either on slow or fast pitch teams.

With 33 years at the telephone company in Mansfield as a service technician, Dick retired in 2001. In 2008 he and his wife Sherry became snowbirds, spending their winters in Englewood, Florida. It was there that Dick found out that senior softball was very big in Florida. He played one season on both a 60's and 70's and over team. The other three seasons he played on only the 70's and over team. In 2012, no longer able to play ball and travel, Dick and Sherry now live in Mansfield full time.
In February 2014, Dick was honored by being inducted in the Loudonville-Perrysville Athletic Hall of Fame.
